How Did We Get Here?: The Great Migration

Join us on February 8, 2022, for this workshop in our How Did We Get Here? series, which has been designed to provide teachers with ready-made, classroom-friendly resources on topics in American history that are front-and-center in current events. Professor Steven Hahn (Professor of History, New York University, and winner of the Pulitzer and Bancroft Prizes for A Nation Under Our Feet: Black Political Struggles in the Rural South from Slavery to the Great Migration) will discuss the history of the Great Migration, its impact on social and political movements of the 20th and 21st centuries, and the origins and evolution of the "New Great Migration" and the resurgence of Black populations in the South.

Following this, Ron Nash (Gilder Lehrman Institute Senior Education Fellow) will lead a pedagogy session walking through the Institute’s unit “James Reese Europe, the 369th Regiment Band, and Jazz.” All registrants will receive a copy of the lesson plan before the workshop.
