This course on colonial America, part of the Gilder Lehrman Institute’s History Essentials series, focuses on British, French, Spanish, and Dutch colonization in North America. Rather than looking ahead to the American Revolution, Professor Fea explores colonial life on its own terms, examining what defined colonial experiences long before the colonies were ripe for rebellion. Beginning with a discussion of mercantilism and what brought Europeans to the “New World,” Professor Fea examines the development of new markets, the birth of race-based slavery, groundbreaking religious and intellectual movements, and the formation of Anglo and African colonial identities.

Led by John Fea, Professor of History, Messiah College
